Rewarding Savagery with Sweets |
Jul 12 - Aug 10, 2008 |
This show will feature several giant piñatas of figures desperately trying to shield themselves from incoming blows. The helpless, pathetic poses of the figures will tug at the viewer, and he must weigh his urge to destroy, his empathy at something defenseless and his hunger for sweets.
Originally from Los Angeles, Zaq Landsberg graduated from New York University with a BFA and has since been based on both coasts. He has shown in several group exhibitions around New York City and Los Angeles as well as built sculptures in the middle of the Utah desert.
He specializes in large scale, site specific sculptures, absurd objects and potentially treasonous conceptual art projects. His past projects include a 1:1 scale replica of an Apache Assault Helicopter which was 45 feet long and stood in the exhibition space like a ship in a bottle, a 13 feet tall stack of youth sports trophies, and three robotic sentinels that stand guard on the borders of Zaqistan, a remote 2 acres of land in Utah desert purchased off of Ebay and declared a sovereign nation.
He received The NYU Dept. of Art and Art Professions Student Excellence Award and
The International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, Honorable Mention.
