Biography

Galena is Oakland, Ca. based artist Billy Sprague. Born Oct. 31st, 1974 in Chicago, IL. Galena has worked across many mediums throughout the years including; photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, collage, film & slide manipulation, stencil art, acrylic & bronze casting, screen/gocco printing, wood/linoleum cuts & more.
Sprague has shown work in group shows in England and the U.S. and most recently in Brooklyn, Oakland & Berkeley. The exhibit at Pehrspace marks his debut solo show in which many of these mediums will be showcased for the very first time! Much of his work exudes an easy to relate to introspective darkness, drawing you in closer for layered details that solidify their larger moods. From very tiny to large scale work, this collection will prove very accessible to varying size & cost issues of most art enthusiasts.
Galena is also a music enthusiast and sound artist. Releasing music for himself and others on his independent record label Rocket Racer for a decade now. This show will include several original album art pieces, music themed work (including a smaller scale version of a massive 28 musician stencil-collage montage currently in the Berkeley Amoeba Music storefront window) and a large reel to reel tape loop sound installation intersecting pieces throughout the gallery. Opening night provides a one-time viewing of manipulated glass-slide projections & ability to obtain several limited prints & cds of recent music productions.
